PSHE
Text
Developing confident, compassionate and responsible individuals
At Bosley St Mary's CE Primary School, we believe that PSHE plays a vital role in helping every child flourish. Our curriculum supports children to understand themselves, develop positive relationships, make informed choices and grow into confident, healthy and responsible individuals.
Rooted in our Christian vision, Every Learner Flourishing, and our BEARS values of Believe, Encourage, Achieve, Relate and Serve, PSHE encourages children to recognise their own worth, respect others and contribute positively to their communities.
Our ambition is for every child to develop the knowledge, understanding and emotional skills needed to lead a safe, healthy and fulfilling life.
How We Teach PSHE
Our PSHE curriculum develops children's personal, social and emotional understanding through six key areas of learning:
- Being Me in My World: Understanding identity, belonging, rights and responsibilities.
- Celebrating Difference: Respecting diversity, recognising individuality and challenging bullying and discrimination.
- Dreams and Goals: Developing aspirations, resilience, motivation and perseverance.
- Healthy Me: Making informed choices about physical and mental health, wellbeing and safety.
- Relationships: Building positive relationships, understanding boundaries and recognising how to keep safe.
- Changing Me: Understanding growth, change and development, including age-appropriate relationships and health education.
Children learn through structured discussion, practical activities, reflection and opportunities to explore real-life situations. We place particular emphasis on emotional literacy, respectful communication and developing strategies to manage feelings and relationships.
Our Curriculum Approach
We follow Jigsaw PSHE 3–11, a carefully sequenced, progressive curriculum which incorporates statutory Relationships and Health Education.
Jigsaw provides a consistent whole-school approach, with all classes exploring the same themes at the same time through age-appropriate learning.
Our curriculum is organised into a two-year rolling programme for Key Stages 1 and 2, adapted for our mixed-age classes. The Early Years Foundation Stage follows an annual programme. Where particular content requires age-specific teaching, including puberty and aspects of relationships and sex education, pupils receive appropriately planned sessions.
Jigsaw's spiral approach allows children to revisit important concepts, deepen their understanding and develop their knowledge and skills as they mature.
Our PSHE curriculum also supports the development of fundamental British values, including democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.
PSHE and Our Christian Vision
PSHE makes an important contribution to our Christian ethos and our commitment to ensuring that every learner flourishes.
Through learning about respect, compassion, forgiveness, responsibility and service, children are encouraged to recognise the dignity and worth of every individual.
Our curriculum promotes a sense of belonging and encourages children to value difference, care for others and understand their responsibilities within the school and wider community.
Opportunities for reflection, thoughtful discussion and consideration of different perspectives support children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
PSHE Beyond the Classroom
PSHE is reinforced through our wider school life, including collective worship, our BEARS values, pupil voice, relationships and everyday interactions.
Children are encouraged to apply their learning by making responsible choices, resolving disagreements respectfully, showing kindness and contributing positively to their school community.
Our school expectations of Ready, Respectful and Safe provide a consistent foundation for developing personal responsibility, positive relationships and consideration for others.
PSHE for Every Learner
We believe that every child is entitled to high-quality, inclusive PSHE education.
Teaching is adapted to reflect children's ages, developmental stages, communication needs and individual experiences. Sensitive subjects are approached carefully, ensuring that children feel safe, respected and able to seek support when needed.
Teachers assess understanding through discussion, observation, pupil responses and reflection, using this information to identify misconceptions and adapt future teaching.
Our ambition is for every child to leave Bosley with the confidence to express themselves, the knowledge to make safe and informed decisions, and the skills to build positive relationships and contribute meaningfully to society.
