Children Battle the Speeders!

On the morning of Monday the 12th of December, Year 6 students from Bosley School along with PCSO Sarah Wilson, PC Bill Heaton & Sgt. Mick Warren from Macclesfield Police, took part in the first ever Driver Engagement Day on the A523 London Road, outside their village school.

This was instigated as the students have long been concerned about the speed of the traffic passing through the village which is in a 40mph zone.

A few weeks ago PCSO Sarah Wilson came into school with the results of the Speed Indicator Device which had been placed outside the school for a week. “We couldn’t believe our eyes!” said Connor Macleod and James Brunt, who are the school’s Junior Road Safety Officers “The highest recorded speed was a colossal 63mph. Something must be done!”

During the Driver Engagement Day the Police pulled in 8 speeding drivers with the highest speed being a whopping 55mph in the 40mph zone. Drivers were then given a choice of a fixed fine with points on their licence or to talk to the children. The children questioned the drivers in the police CCTV van. Excuses for speeding ranged from “I don’t know” to “I’m on my way to the dentist”.

PC Bill Heaton, who was pulling the drivers in, said “I think it’s good for the police to be seen in the community and to get the community involved with local issues.” Sgt. Mick Warren, head of the Macclesfield Neighbourhood Policing Team, who was also manning the speed gun, said “It’s good to see local officers working with local people to make the village a safer place.”

Let’s hope this initiative helps this village become a safer place for all those who live here and all the children who come to Bosley School and Bosley Bobkins Pre-school.
